Sberbank Set to Launch Cross-Border Digital Currency Payments for Businesses

Sberbank is set to let businesses make international payments in digital currencies directly through its mobile app by the end of 2026.

Customers will be able to make these payments through the SberBusiness app. Anatoly Popov, deputy chairman of Sberbank’s executive board, said the necessary infrastructure is already in place. The bank plans to integrate the new payment method into the cross-border business workflows companies already use, so customers will not have to understand the underlying technology.

“The goal is to make sure paying with cryptocurrency doesn’t become a complicated quest for businesses. We will integrate it into familiar cross-border business workflows so customers don’t even have to think about the technology behind it – they can simply choose a convenient payment method, make the payment and receive the full set of documents,” Popov said.

Sberbank also plans to expand lending backed by digital assets. It currently accepts Bitcoin as collateral and eventually expects to add Ethereum and the Tether stablecoin once the Bank of Russia allows those assets to be publicly traded and new regulations take effect.
