SIBUR Moves to a Next-Generation Architecture

Russian industrial companies are moving to domestic data platforms that successfully handle high-load workloads, giving the industry greater technological sovereignty and a foundation for developing AI services.

SIBUR Holding, one of the world’s leading petrochemical companies, has completed the migration of a key segment of its corporate data platform from a foreign vendor’s technology to a Russian software stack.

Resilience and Security

Part of SIBUR’s infrastructure responsible for storing, consolidating and exchanging information among internal systems now runs on products from Arenadata Software, a leading Russian developer of big-data platforms – Arenadata Hyperwave (ADH) and Arenadata Streaming (ADS). The selected tools meet the petrochemical giant’s requirements for enterprise-grade technology. Both products are listed in Russia’s national software registry.

ADH is a general-purpose system for collecting, storing and analyzing massive volumes of information of any type, from documents to sensor readings. It can serve as the foundation for unified data environments, support the deployment of artificial intelligence and replace foreign software.

ADS continuously transfers and processes streaming data between systems in real time. The platform is built on open technologies, Apache Kafka and Apache NiFi, supplemented with enterprise modules for security and cluster management. The architecture offers fault tolerance, granular access controls and uninterrupted operation under heavy workloads.

From Near Real Time to Lakehouse

The platform has already demonstrated its reliability in production: it processes data from more than 100 information systems. ADS handles an aggregate load of about 50,000 messages per second across more than 150 queues, while the busiest individual queues transmit as many as 2,500 messages per second.

Using the Arenadata platform, SIBUR has deployed a range of projects critical to its business and production assets. These include near-real-time transmission and processing of industrial control system and IIoT data, predictive equipment diagnostics, integration and processing of R&D data, intelligent video surveillance, mobile inspection rounds, data-quality monitoring, and automated reporting of environmental impact data to government registries.

The next step is to evolve the platform toward a Lakehouse – an architecture combining the capabilities of a data lake with those of a traditional enterprise data warehouse. New Arenadata services have already allowed the company to begin that transition. Arenadata Hyperwave supports Data Lake, Lakehouse and Data Mesh architectures, enabling both structured and unstructured data to be stored and analyzed.

For SIBUR, this lays the groundwork for further unifying operational technology and corporate data in a single environment. Over time, that infrastructure can expand the company’s capabilities in predictive diagnostics, manufacturing analytics, machine learning and AI services, all of which need continuous access to large volumes of information from industrial facilities. The platform is explicitly designed to support machine-learning and artificial-intelligence workloads.

An Independent Stack for Russian Industry

Arenadata Software products are increasingly being deployed across Russian industry for complex analytics and AI development. In 2018-2019, for example, Novolipetsk Steel (NLMK) built a 300-terabyte industrial Ozero dannykh (Data Lake) on Arenadata Hadoop, bringing together 70 different sources, including Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) sensors, MES and industrial control systems, as well as several years of historical data. The infrastructure enabled the deployment of digital twins and ML models that prevented up to 40% of defects and optimized ferroalloy consumption.

In 2024, Nornickel launched its own Data-platforma (Data Platform) based on ADH, ADB and ADS. The platform enabled the company to process sensor telemetry in near real time, connect ML models and generate analytical reports through BI tools, substantially reducing the load on dispatch systems and shortening time to market for digital projects.

In 2025, Severstal-infocom and Arenadata Software signed a strategic partnership agreement running through 2029, with the goal of replacing the SAP BW platform. A prototype has already been tested on the process used to generate a trial balance for the procurement function. Over time, the partnership is expected to produce a fully import-independent technology stack and bring to market a new commercial product for building enterprise data warehouses, targeting other industrial companies in Russia and abroad.

New Markets for Russian IT Platforms

Demand for Arenadata Software products is also growing in countries neighboring Russia. In July 2026, the company signed a distribution agreement with Axoft to promote its products in Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Georgia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Mongolia and Moldova. SIBUR’s successful deployment offers further evidence of the maturity of Russian data technology and strengthens the case for bringing these products to customers in Central Asia and other regions.
