Researchers at the Tsentr Iskusstvennogo Intellekta Novosibirskogo Gosuniversiteta (Artificial Intelligence Center of Novosibirsk State University) have developed and patented a program called Bezopasnye Lekarstva (Safe Medicines) for personalized drug selection, the university’s press service said.

The software evaluates drug compatibility, potential side effects, and the impact of medications on specific clinical and laboratory indicators.

The tool is particularly relevant for patients undergoing combination therapy. Vladimir Ivanisenko, a researcher at NSU and the Institut Tsitologii i Genetiki SO RAN (Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences), said automated analysis reduces the risk of medical errors and improves treatment safety when multiple drugs are prescribed simultaneously.

A Digital Assistant Module for Doctors

The system uses artificial intelligence technologies and semantic knowledge graphs. Algorithms analyze a patient’s clinical profile – laboratory results, symptoms, and comorbid conditions – and assist physicians in decision-making.

“We select medications so that they do not exacerbate existing disorders and remain compatible with the patient’s current indicators. Solutions of this kind do not exist today either in Russia or in global practice,” Ivanisenko was quoted as saying by the university’s press service.

The program will become part of Doktor Pirogov (Doctor Pirogov), a digital assistant for physicians. The service may soon be integrated into the medical information system of a private clinic. In the longer term, it could become a module within a broader digital physician assistant platform in Russia’s public healthcare system.
