Researchers at Tomsk Polytechnic University have developed Russia’s first robotic system designed to inspect infrastructure and communications at nuclear power plants. The device is intended for use in radiation-hazard areas at facilities scheduled for decommissioning.

The prototype has already completed the required laboratory testing phase. It is now being prepared for trials in real operating conditions. For that purpose, the university’s research nuclear reactor will be used.

The system includes a mechanical platform, a control system, software for data collection and analysis, as well as integrated monitoring tools equipped with a dosimeter and a gamma-radiation spectrometer.

Developers note that no equivalent technology currently exists in Russia. Existing foreign systems are designed primarily for inspections of large-scale facilities. The Russian-built platform is more compact and versatile.
