Azimut, a company within the Rostec state corporation, has installed a digital radar system called AORL-AMI 2700 at Mendeleyevo Airport on Kunashir, the southernmost island of the Greater Kuril Ridge. Aircraft will now be able to take off and land safely even during the dense fog that frequently blankets the island. Officials expect the equipment to improve transportation access to the Kuril Islands. Rostec’s press service shared the announcement with IT-Russia.

Small but “All-Seeing”

The AORL-AMI 2700 radar determines aircraft positions more accurately than earlier systems and helps increase airport throughput. It also improves the quality of data exchange between aircraft and ground systems. As a result, the workload on air-traffic control services has been reduced. The developers also highlight another advantage of the system: its compact size and low energy consumption.

According to Azimut deputy CEO Aleksei Galchenkov, installing the AORL-AMI 2700 at Mendeleyevo will solve one of the most pressing problems affecting air service to the island. Frequent dense fog has previously disrupted airport operations.

“Our radar can track aircraft even in bad weather, allowing air-traffic controllers to manage flights regardless of meteorological conditions. This will help improve the island’s transportation accessibility and support the development of tourism,” Galchenkov said.

Digital Radar Expands Across the Russian Arctic

The same Azimut equipment has already been deployed in Chukotka, the Kuril Islands, Yamal and other parts of Russia’s Far North. The digital radar has proven effective in these environments.

Azimut is a leading Russian developer and manufacturer of aeronautical navigation systems and complexes used to equip airports and air routes. The company designs, produces and delivers turnkey solutions for civil aviation, including communications, navigation, landing and surveillance systems, as well as air-traffic management automation. It also carries out comprehensive projects to equip and modernize airports and air-traffic control centers.

Earlier we reported that ILS 2700 smart systems in Russia help aircraft land safely in bad weather.
