PSNRU Researchers Develop Portal for Bat Population Monitoring in Perm Region
Researchers at Perm State National Research University are developing a specialized portal for monitoring bat populations in the Perm region.
The work is being carried out as part of a project on acoustic studies of bats in the region's karst landscapes. According to the PSNRU press service, researchers are currently collecting field data and building a database of acoustic signals from bats inhabiting caves and grottos in the area.
The resulting web portal will take the form of a digital map of bat species diversity, featuring species descriptions, location data, and signal recordings used by scientists to identify individual species.
A separate research track involves developing machine learning-based algorithms for automatic species identification by acoustic signals. Such technologies are expected to accelerate data processing and improve the efficiency of population monitoring.
The data are planned to be used for further research, environmental monitoring, and recommendations for biodiversity conservation in the region. Earlier, PSNRU lecturer Dmitry Slashchev and associate professor Ivan Cherepanov received a grant for bat monitoring in karst caves in 2026–2027.
