Ufa Scientists Develop AI System to Prevent Blindness in Seniors

Researchers in Russia are building an AI tool that can diagnose age-related macular degeneration with the precision of top specialists, potentially saving the eyesight of millions.

A team in Ufa is working on artificial intelligence that can detect one of the leading causes of blindness among the elderly — age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The technology is designed to protect the vision of millions, especially in regions where experienced ophthalmologists are scarce.

The algorithm analyzes retinal images captured by optical coherence tomography and flags early signs of vision loss. Globally, the stakes are enormous: according to the World Health Organization, around 1 billion cases of blindness and vision impairment could have been prevented with timely diagnosis. AMD is one of the biggest threats, affecting one in three older adults.

The innovation comes from the Laboratory of Applied Biophotonics at Ufa University of Science and Technology, developed in collaboration with doctors at the Optimed clinic network. The university’s press office told IT-Russia that the system’s strength lies in its “sharp eye.” It can recognize a critical intermediate stage of the disease, when timely medical intervention can still stop progression and prevent irreversible blindness. Researchers note the AI’s diagnostic accuracy rivals that of the best human specialists.

For patients in remote parts of Russia, the system could be life-changing. By deploying the AI in local clinics, doctors could carry out mass screenings, ease their workload, and cut down on diagnostic errors.

The project illustrates how collaboration between engineers and physicians is driving breakthrough results for public health and quality of life.
