Russia Builds Next-Gen Nuclear Platform with Breakthrough Reactor Project

Rosatom’s 'Breakthrough' project aims to eliminate radioactive waste and nuclear accident risks by developing a closed fuel cycle reactor system.

Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom is advancing a project aptly named 'Breakthrough' to pioneer next-generation nuclear technologies. The initiative is designed to make catastrophic reactor failures virtually impossible that eliminates the need for evacuations or relocations in case of reactor damage, and generate power without accumulating spent nuclear fuel.

One of the project’s key features is its ability to repeatedly recycle used nuclear fuel, addressing the industry's long-standing concern over limited fuel resources.

As part of the program an experimental demonstration energy complex is being constructed in Seversk, Tomsk Region, at the Siberian Chemical Combine. This facility will serve as a testbed for new-generation nuclear energy technologies.

Top Russian scientists are contributing to the effort. During the recent Digital Industry of Industrial Russia (CIPR) conference in Nizhny Novgorod, new research agreements were signed to support both fundamental and applied scientific collaboration under the 'Breakthrough' program.
