Laboratory to Restore Lake Baikal's Historical Memory Being Created at ISU
A youth laboratory for geoarchaeological research into historical memory is being established at Irkutsk State University under a grant from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

It will work on a model of historical processes around Lake Baikal from the Stone Age to the present. In addition to archaeologists, the interdisciplinary team includes geologists, a geographer, a biologist, and a specialist in information technology and 3D modeling. The researchers will develop conceptual proposals and methodological recommendations for creating a reliable historical and cultural model of Baikal Siberia. It will draw on data from archaeology, related disciplines, and written sources.
According to the young scholar, this matters because of the growing volume of unreliable information and fakes about the history of Siberia. They arise in part from low public awareness of scientific research results.
The laboratory's project won the Ministry of Science and Higher Education competition in 2026. It will receive 51 million rubles ($~560,000) over three years for its establishment and development.
