Perm Prepares Arkhiereysky Quarter for Redevelopment
In parallel, a database is being compiled on people buried at the local cemetery and their descendants.
Archaeologists have already discovered about 100 historic gravestones, which are being used to establish the boundaries of burial sites. The project is overseen by the Commission for Activities in the Quarter. A working group led by Yulia Kashaeva, director of the State Archive of the Perm Region, presented the concept. The database will be the first part of the project and will be hosted in the Arkhivy Prikamya (Archives of the Kama Region) system.
The information repository will draw on archival records and documents, as well as information from the museum and the Russian Orthodox Church. Archivists, museum employees, local historians and genealogists are gathering the materials, with the database set to include documents, biographies, photographs and newspaper articles.
The archive is also building a collection of accounts from Perm residents. Anyone can contribute memories of the Arkhiereyskoye Cemetery, including descendants of people buried there who now live in other regions.
The Arkhiereysky Quarter is one of Perm’s major heritage preservation projects. The work has three components: improvements to the area around the cathedral, creation of the Yablonevy sad (Apple Orchard) and restoration of the Arkhiereyskiye doma (Bishops’ Houses).
