Researchers at Perm Polytechnic have developed a rapid method for calculating the energy efficiency of oil pumps. It can determine optimal operating parameters with up to 99% accuracy.

The technology addresses one of the oil industry’s major challenges. Wells gradually age and their resource reserves decline, but pumps often continue operating under the same settings. This results in unnecessary electricity consumption. The problem has long been addressed through manual calculations, but the new method eliminates the need for that approach.

“The technology is based on a mathematical relationship. Unlike complex computer models that require dozens of input parameters, our method uses just three: the pump’s rotation speed, its daily operating time and the desired production volume. Using these inputs and the derived equation, we can quickly calculate two key results: how much oil can be produced and how much electricity will be required,” said Alexander Semenov, associate professor at the Department of Microprocessor Automation Systems at Perm National Research Polytechnic University.

The new approach will allow oil companies to save electricity without reducing production volumes. An engineer at the site or an automated system will be able to determine equipment operating parameters in just seconds.
