Russian Surgeons Use 3D Modeling to Improve Breast Surgery Precision

A new Russian-developed system uses AI and 3D imaging to assist doctors in breast tumor diagnosis and implant selection.

A Russian 3D breast modeling system is being hailed as a breakthrough in global surgical practice. The technology, now used in preoperative planning, was recently adopted by oncologists at Sechenov University, who praised its ability to improve precision at every stage of surgery. The platform allows physicians to virtually “try on” implants using detailed anatomical models—helping ensure both medical success and aesthetic outcomes, which are especially important for female patients.

With the help of a high-resolution 3D model, doctors gain a full view of the target area. A neural network automatically highlights tumors in red, allowing clinicians to anticipate complications and adjust the treatment plan accordingly. In one recent case, traditional mammography revealed a single tumor, while the 3D model detected four—leading to a major change in surgical strategy.

The technology, developed in Russia, is expected to be used not only in oncology but also in cosmetic surgery.
