Russia Deploys AI to Verify Voter Signatures Ahead of 2025 Elections

A new AI-powered system is helping Russian election officials detect errors and prevent fraud as the country gears up for its September vote.

Russia’s electoral system is ramping up its use of advanced technologies to improve the transparency and accuracy of elections. A key innovation is the SPTK-PL hardware-software suite, which uses artificial intelligence to verify the authenticity of signatures collected in support of candidates and political organizations.

The AI system analyzes handwriting patterns, flags inconsistencies, and identifies potential violations with high precision, significantly streamlining the verification process for election commissions. SPTK-PL is now widely used by electoral bodies across the country.

According to Yevgenia Ivleva, Chair of the Orenburg Regional Election Commission, the system greatly eases the burden of signature checks, but the final decisions are still made by human experts. She emphasized that while AI helps spot clusters of handwriting and detect discrepancies, it serves only as a supporting tool. Ultimate judgments are made by a working group of specialists who consider a wide range of contextual factors.

Russia’s Unified Voting Day will take place on September 14, 2025. In major cities like Moscow, voters can already cast their ballots using secure digital platforms on their smartphones.
