Russia Deploys Signal-Based Train Control System to Boost Rail Traffic Efficiency

A new interval regulation technology allows Russian Railways to reduce spacing between trains by using engineer input instead of trackside signals.

Russian Railways has introduced a next-generation interval regulation system for managing passenger train movements. Unlike traditional methods that rely on trackside signals, this system responds directly to signals from train operators. The company says this marks a significant shift in rail traffic management.

By enabling shorter intervals between trains without compromising safety, the system increases track capacity. Eventually, it could allow commuter trains to run at minimum possible intervals. Pre-launch testing also confirmed the system’s resilience to cyberattacks.

The rollout requires a full infrastructure upgrade, including new cabling, signals, and electric drives. Modern automatic blocking systems for remote control of switches and lights must also be installed, along with new posts to house microprocessor equipment.

The development is part of Russia’s broader effort to modernize its transportation infrastructure. In parallel, the country is preparing to launch autonomous train operations. For safety, human operators will remain in the cab in a supervisory role.
