AI Diagnoses Hip Osteoarthritis in Russia Using X-rays

A neural network built into the city’s radiology system helps radiologists spot early-stage joint damage and issue reports faster.

In Russia, artificial intelligence is now being used to diagnose osteoarthritis of the hip joint. Specialists from the Moscow Center for Diagnostics and Telemedicine have completed testing of a new AI-powered service that can detect signs of the condition from X-ray images, according to the city’s official government website.

The technology has been integrated into the Unified Radiological Information Service (ERIS), becoming a vital tool for radiologists. The system highlights suspicious areas on X-rays and performs automated measurements, significantly reducing the time needed to complete diagnostic reports. The neural network is trained to recognize pathologies across more than 40 diagnostic categories.

Advanced digital tools are now common in Russian healthcare. AI-driven assistants help doctors review patient records, suggest treatment plans, and recommend further testing. In surgical preparation, the technology can generate 3D anatomical models — for example, of breast tissue — to guide more precise interventions.
