Russia Teaches AI to Describe Scents

Researchers at Pyatigorsk State University have developed an AI system that translates smells into words—an innovation set to transform the perfume industry and online shopping alike.

The program combines artificial intelligence with linguistics to solve one of the toughest sensory challenges: accurately describing aromas in text. For perfumers and consumers, this opens the door to more precise fragrance matching, strengthening Russia’s position in global science and technology.

According to IT-Russia, the software processes and classifies scents using a vast linguistic database of millions of words and expressions. It can match fragrances to user queries like “fresh, with hints of citrus and sea breeze.”

The breakthrough highlights Russia’s potential at the intersection of science and consumer markets. As online shopping becomes the norm—and with many people’s sense of smell weakened after COVID-19—such a digital tool could prove indispensable.

“We didn’t buy this solution; we built it ourselves—with our own architecture, logic, and databases. Our team wrote a massive amount of code,” said project leader Pavel Baryshnikov.

Beyond helping customers choose perfumes online with confidence, the system also allows manufacturers to better communicate product qualities. Its adaptability is another strength: it can generate descriptions that resonate across generations, from youth to older adults.
