AI-Powered Traffic Cameras Are Making Moscow's Roads Safer

Artificial intelligence has helped reduce traffic fatalities in the Russian capital by 20 percent since the beginning of the year.

Since January 2025, Moscow’s AI-based traffic monitoring system has recorded nearly one million road incidents, according to the city’s Traffic Management Center. As a result, the number of accidents has dropped by 13 percent, and traffic deaths have fallen by 20 percent compared to the same period in 2021.

Installed along major highways in the capital, the smart cameras use neural networks to automatically detect 13 different types of incidents, including crashes, unusual events like car fires or fallen trees, and traffic violations. This real-time detection enables authorities to respond quickly, reduce the risk of secondary accidents, and improve overall road safety.

After a successful pilot, Moscow officials are scaling up the system. In the coming months, the intelligent cameras will fully cover the Moscow High-Speed Diameter and will later expand to other major city roads.

The rollout of AI-powered analytics in the city’s traffic infrastructure began in 2022. In addition to spotting violations, the system supports traffic flow analysis, helping optimize urban mobility.

Experts say that integrating advanced technologies into transport systems is a key step toward building smart cities and enhancing road safety across Russia.
