Russia May Tap “Golden Band” Frequencies for 5G

A working group from the Ministry of Digital Development and the Ministry of Defense is weighing the release of the 3.4–3.8 GHz spectrum, known as the “golden band,” for nationwide 5G networks.

Speaking at the Kazan Digital Week forum, Digital Development Minister Maksut Shadayev said the 3.4–3.8 GHz range is the most effective for high-speed 5G data transfer. Currently occupied, the band could be freed if technical conditions and funding allow.

The rollout of 5G is expected to unlock wide-ranging opportunities for Russian users. Beyond high-speed internet and seamless connectivity, the networks can manage huge numbers of devices in dense areas without loss of quality. Millions of smart devices could be connected simultaneously with minimal latency.

According to a Ministry of Digital Development decree, an auction for 5G licenses will be held by the end of 2025. Two spectrum blocks in the 4800–4990 MHz range will be auctioned, starting at 26.2 billion rubles (about 311 million USD) and 21.2 billion rubles (about 267 million USD).

Moscow has already tested the first fully Russian-made 5G antenna, which demonstrated data speeds of up to 1 Gbps.
