Russia Deploys a New Automation System at a Remote Gas Field
A Russian gas producer has replaced foreign automation with a domestic control system—without shutting down production—at a major field in the Arctic region.

Russia has rolled out a new industrial automation system at the remote West-Tarkosalinskoye gas field in the Yamal region. Gazprom Dobycha Noyabrsk has completed an import-substitution project that replaced foreign automation with a modern Russian-made control system across key infrastructure at the site, according to Armstrong.ru.
The project covered six gas compressor units as well as processing equipment across multiple facilities. Work began in February 2025 and was carried out in three stages, all without interrupting ongoing production.
A powerful software-and-hardware complex was integrated into the field’s existing infrastructure. The system includes 32 controllers, 12 servers, 10 automated operator workstations, backup control panels, and a dedicated communications cabinet. Before the system went live, all maintenance and operations staff were trained. The platform is now running in standard operating mode, with its reliability and performance described as fully meeting operational requirements.
Tailored Algorithms for Every Scenario
The automation system continuously collects and processes data from field sensors and issues coordinated commands to control gas compressor units. To ensure uninterrupted operation, it processes large volumes of data in real time.
Each production scenario is governed by its own software algorithm, allowing equipment to operate autonomously and with high precision. This approach reduces manual intervention while improving consistency and control in harsh, remote operating conditions.
Earlier reports also noted that Gazprom Neft significantly shortened the timeline of geological exploration projects by deploying artificial intelligence technologies—highlighting a broader push toward automation and digital systems across Russia’s energy sector.
