Russia Showcases AI-Driven Mining and Environmental Tech at CIPR-2025 Forum

At the country’s largest IT industry event, Norilsk Nickel unveiled new digital platforms for metallurgy, mining automation, and real-time pollution monitoring.

At the Digital Industry of Industrial Russia (CIPR-2025) forum, Russian mining giant Norilsk Nickel presented cutting-edge projects in digitalization, artificial intelligence, and IT. The company showcased solutions developed by its industry-specific centers of excellence for Metallurgy and Ecology, according to Moskovsky Komsomolets.

Four major digital initiatives were highlighted—three related to metallurgy: a mining and geological information system, a mine planning platform, and an underground mining dispatch system. The most notable progress, however, was in environmental technology.

Norilsk Nickel’s flagship innovation, Axioma, is an AI-powered digital tool for real-time air pollution monitoring and forecasting. Already tested at the Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant in Norilsk, the system has received certification as an official AI-based measurement instrument. It’s expected to go live in Q3 2025 and is ready for rollout across various industrial sectors, including metallurgy, petrochemicals, energy, and oil & gas.

All metallurgy-related systems have been consolidated into a unified digital platform known as MAGMA. This includes MAGMA Geo, MAGMA Plan, and MAGMA Control—designed to automate core processes in the mining industry. Final development is expected to wrap up in 2025, with implementation starting in 2026.

Meanwhile, the Russian government is working to formalize the legal framework for applying artificial intelligence technologies in the industrial sector.
