Russia Unveils GR-40: A Factory Robot That Builds Other Robots

The GR-40 is Russia’s latest step toward autonomous manufacturing—doubling productivity while saving space and slashing costs.

Russia has launched production of a new industrial robot model, the RusRobot GR-40, at the Robot Factory in Chelyabinsk. The robot's standout feature? It’s designed to build other robots, according to reports from Rigel.

With an annual production capacity of at least 1,000 units, the GR-40 represents a major leap in the country’s industrial automation drive. Government programs—including subsidies and low-interest financing—are fueling the sector’s growth.

Unveiled at the Metalworking trade show in Moscow, the GR-40 was hailed as a breakthrough for Russia’s robotics market. Unlike traditional six-axis robotic arms, it uses a gantry-style design that lets it move above machining equipment and be placed closer to production units—maximizing floor space.

The robot can simultaneously handle two workpieces, lifting up to 45 kilograms at a time. It’s capable of working with 70% of the components used in mechanical engineering, and can service four to five machines at once due to its extended X-axis. The result: reduced equipment needs and a payback period of just three to four months.

GR-40 is expected to significantly boost productivity in long-cycle manufacturing. Future models from the Chelyabinsk factory may handle up to 300 kilograms.
