Russia Uses AI to Assess Meat Quality and Boost Farm Efficiency

A new wave of AI technologies is helping Russian farmers automate production lines and accurately measure meat marbling in real time.

At the first international iAGRI exhibition for innovation and high technology in agriculture, the Russian company MooMind unveiled several artificial intelligence solutions for the agro-industrial sector. The firm specializes in AI systems that enhance automation, analytics, and decision-making in modern farming.

AI on the Conveyor Line

According to MooMind CEO Grigory Portyankin, the company presented intelligent automation tools for product transportation, vaccination tracking, and livestock care. One key innovation is an automated system that identifies products on conveyor lines after cutting, significantly speeding up production. Previously, workers manually selected the item code on the weighing screen—now, the AI completes that step in just one-fifth of a second. The system combines computer vision algorithms, analytics, and an intuitive visualization interface.

Smart Meat Classification

Another breakthrough MooMind product uses AI algorithms to determine the marbling grade of meat—Prime, Choice, or Select—based on cross-sectional images. This allows producers to achieve consistency and accuracy previously unattainable with manual inspection.

Data-Driven Profitability

Portyankin added that several new projects are underway, focused on monitoring biosecurity compliance at farms. These include systems for assessing feed levels to optimize feeder routes, tracking piglet care, and monitoring cattle behavior in dairy herds. “All of these technologies aim to address the key challenges of agricultural enterprises: improving livestock survival rates, increasing productivity, and ultimately boosting profitability,” he explained.
