Bikers Get a Navigation Tool Built Just for Them

Russia's Navitel has updated its Navitel Navigator 12 app with a dedicated motorcycle mode. The new version adapts navigation to the way riders actually travel, bringing motorcycle-specific routing and alerts to the company's digital navigation platform.

The update is designed to make navigation easier both in cities and on longer trips, helping improve rider safety while making journeys more comfortable.

Navigation Tailored for Motorcycles

After adding the Motorcycle vehicle type to Navitel Navigator 12, users can now select it in the app's settings. That allows route planning and navigation alerts to account for the characteristics of riding a two-wheeled vehicle.

The new mode is designed to make life easier for motorcyclists by adapting navigation to real-world riding conditions. It also changes how the app handles speed enforcement cameras. Because motorcycles do not carry front license plates, the application no longer displays or alerts riders about cameras aimed at approaching traffic. Instead, it notifies users only about cameras that monitor vehicles from behind and are capable of detecting violations committed by motorcyclists. That significantly reduces irrelevant alerts while making warnings more accurate and useful.

Jams Are Still Visible

In motorcycle mode, the navigation system continues to display live traffic conditions on the map so riders can monitor congestion and assess traffic density along their route. However, traffic data is not used when calculating the route itself. In practice, motorcycles can maneuver through congestion more easily than passenger vehicles and often avoid long traffic jams altogether. Riders can still see where traffic is becoming particularly dense, but the application does not reroute them because of congestion, allowing routes to remain optimized for motorcycle travel.

Reducing the Rider's Workload

According to the developer, Navitel Navigator 12 is designed to become a more convenient and accurate navigation assistant for motorcyclists than general-purpose navigation apps. The update reduces the rider's workload by displaying current road conditions, planning routes around the characteristics of motorcycle travel in both urban and highway environments, and helping riders travel more safely and confidently.

The new motorcycle mode reflects the growing popularity of motorcycles in Russia. During the first half of 2026 alone, 32,700 new motorcycles were sold across the country. Analysts expect future versions of the software to add features such as motorcycle touring routes, road surface quality information, motorcycle service locations, and fuel stations. Another important advantage of Navitel Navigator 12 is its offline navigation capability, which remains particularly valuable on long-distance trips and in regions with unreliable mobile coverage.

The Navitel Navigator 12 update illustrates how Russian mapping services are evolving toward specialized navigation algorithms for different types of transportation. At the same time, the development of domestic navigation platforms contributes to Russia's technological sovereignty by reducing reliance on foreign technologies. Navitel Navigator 12 could also become a competitive export product because it already includes maps covering 66 countries. The platform could be expanded into CIS, European, and Asian markets, although successful international deployment would require localization of speed camera databases, traffic regulations, and route calculation models for each country.

Navigation technologies support the uninterrupted operation of transportation, energy, and communications infrastructure while also serving as a critical foundation for the digital economy and the defense industrial sector. A sovereign, interference-resistant, and technologically independent navigation system is an essential element of national security and the country's competitiveness in the face of today's challenges
