Russia’s Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation has tested a programmable SIM card aimed at improving mobile connectivity on trains, Transport Minister Andrey Nikitin said in an interview with local media.

The Multisim technology automatically connects to the network with the strongest signal. Passengers will be able to use multiple phone numbers or tariff plans from the same or different operators on a single device.

Mobile Connectivity Is Improving

According to the minister, mobile service is steadily improving along major routes, including the Moscow – Saint Petersburg railway line, the Moscow – Nizhny Novgorod railway line, and rail links to southern resort destinations. He added that trials are also under way involving satellite communications and dedicated railway networks.

The transport minister cautioned that it is too early to talk about a nationwide rollout, noting that “projects like these require significant human as well as technical resources.”
