Russian telecom operator MTS has tested fixed broadband technology based on the 50G PON standard, the company said.

Download speeds reached a record 38 Gbps, while upload speeds hit 21 Gbps. According to the company, that is up to 38 times faster than current average home internet speeds in Russia.

MTS said 50G PON makes it possible to simultaneously connect Wi-Fi 6 routers with wireless speeds of up to 9.6 Gbps, computers with access speeds of up to 10 Gbps, gaming or enterprise servers capable of transmitting data at up to 25 Gbps, as well as 4G and 5G base stations to enhance indoor coverage.

For Developers and Industrial Sites

“In our case, the unprecedented speeds achieved in Russia primarily translate into broad bandwidth capacity, enabling multiple high-speed devices to connect to a single access point without service degradation. Focusing on 50G PON technology will meet our network capacity needs for at least the next 10 years for residential complexes, business centers, infrastructure and industrial facilities – particularly as smart home and smart city solutions, IoT deployments, digital content creation, and indoor 4G and, in the future, 5G coverage expand,” said Vladislav Medvedev, technical director of MTS’s Moscow region division.

He added that in 2026 the company plans to deploy a pilot 50G PON zone in one of Moscow’s residential complexes.
