Specialists at the Volgograd Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation have patented an unmanned aerial patrol system, the state news agency TASS reported.

The aircraft is intended to patrol areas during large public events. The unmanned device is equipped with a loudspeaker and four aerosol pepper spray canisters.

“A cartridge-firing device is mounted on the underside of the quadcopter’s body, while a public address system with an antenna is installed on top and connected to a microphone transmitter at the ground control command post. Signal beacons are installed on the quadcopter’s arms near the power units. On both sides of the firing device housing, barrel magazines are mounted on axles. Each pair of barrels is equipped with a laser targeting system,” TASS quoted the patent authors as saying.

Broad Range of Applications

The device, developed by cadets at the academy, could also be used for public outreach campaigns and to help prevent break-ins and theft. Its sirens and pepper spray discharge may also be used to deter aggressive animals.

Drones are already being used in Russia to patrol territories. In several regions, they monitor forest conditions to help prevent illegal logging. In northern Russia, unmanned aircraft are being tested to monitor seasonal winter roads and ice crossings. The systems survey designated stretches of road and transmit real-time data to dispatchers about hazardous traffic conditions.
