Delivery Robots in Russia Get Official Traffic Rules

Autonomous couriers are now regulated for safety and accountability on Russian streets.

Russia is seeing a rise in the use of autonomous delivery robots for groceries and other shipments. To keep up the government has introduced official traffic regulations governing how these robots operate on sidewalks, road shoulders, and bike lanes.

New rules specify that delivery robots must not exceed 80 cm in width or 120 kg in weight. They are capped at speeds of 10 km/h in pedestrian zones and 25 km/h on roadways. These restrictions are aimed at reducing potential accidents and ensuring safe interactions with pedestrians and vehicles. The bots will be equipped with sensors, lights, and QR codes for visibility and tracking. Oversight of the initiative is being handled by Russia’s Ministry of Transport.

With clear standards in place, robotic delivery logistics are expected to grow rapidly, and the robots themselves are set to become disciplined and fully recognized participants in public traffic.
