Digital System for Forecasting Emissions Created in Russia’s Metallurgy Sector

The system is built using artificial intelligence and digital twin technology.

Russian mining and metals company Nornickel has developed a digital twin of a metallurgical furnace capable of forecasting production-related emissions. Company President Vladimir Potanin spoke about the project in an interview with the Russia-24 television channel.

According to him, the predictive system has proven more effective than conventional sensor-based monitoring. The company is now raising the question of formally introducing the concept of predictive emissions control into legislation.

“The approach has received support from the government and relevant ministries, because nothing like this exists anywhere else in the world,” Potanin said. “Everyone measures emissions using sensors, more or less accurate and reliable. But predictive systems simply do not exist. This is a step forward, and we intend to scale it.”

Scaling to Other Areas

The emissions forecasting system, called Axioma, was developed using artificial intelligence and digital twins. It makes it possible not only to identify emissions after they occur, but also to predict them based on raw material preparation, furnace parameters, and atmospheric conditions.

Potanin added that talks are already underway with government agencies about applying the technology in other industries.

From a Resource Company to a Technology Company

Potanin also predicted a near-term breakthrough in the use of unmanned systems in mining operations at Nornickel facilities. According to him, becoming a more technology-driven company requires the active use of artificial intelligence.

“AI is already being applied: metal recovery during ore processing is improving, mining equipment operates more efficiently during extraction, and metallurgical production parameters are getting better,” Potanin said.
