Russia Approves Digital Student IDs and Gradebooks

Students will be able to access the documents through university systems, the Gosuslugi portal, and the MAX messenger.

Russia is rolling out digital student ID cards and gradebooks after the State Duma passed the relevant law in its second and third readings.

Students at universities, along with medical residents and postgraduate researchers, will be able to access the digital documents through their institutions’ information systems, the Gosuslugi public services portal, and the national MAX messenger. The shift to digital documents, however, will not apply to students enrolled at institutions linked to defense and national security.

Clear Benefits

The change is expected to simplify access to benefits, including discounts on transit passes and reduced prices for museums, theater performances, and concerts. Discounts may be applied automatically during online purchases after users authenticate via the Gosuslugi portal.

The digital documents will also function as campus access passes and allow students to track academic performance online. Paper versions will remain available upon request.

Earlier, the government ran a pilot program to test digital student documents. More than 200 universities and over 300,000 students took part in the experiment.
