Russia Appoints Artificial Intelligence to Government Post for the First Time

Facing a talent shortage, a Russian region has installed an AI system in a legal advisory role—cutting response times from days to hours.

For the first time in Russian history, an artificial intelligence system has been appointed to a government position. The news was reported by PriamurMedia citing the Amur Region's business ombudsman.

The AI system now serves as a senior legal advisor. The human employee who previously held the role was not laid off but reassigned to a similar vacancy at the Public Chamber.

According to Igor Radchenko, the region's commissioner for entrepreneurs’ rights, the move was necessary due to staffing shortages and tight budgets. The results have been remarkable. In just two months, the time needed to process legal inquiries has dropped from two working days to just one hour.

Legal advocacy has also improved. Last year, the ombudsman’s office filed 19 cases with the Arbitration Court. In the first half of 2025 alone, that number has already climbed to 30.

Officials believe that the Amur Region’s experiment could serve as a model for other parts of the country. AI not only accelerates bureaucratic processes but also frees up human workers to focus on more complex and meaningful tasks.
