Russia Rolls Out Smart Electricity Meters in Chechnya

Chechnya is at the forefront of Russia’s push to digitize public utilities, with a large-scale rollout of smart electricity meters already transforming how residents track and manage energy use.

Chechnya is moving aggressively to bring digital technologies into its housing and utilities sector. Regional power supplier 'Chechenenergo' has launched a sweeping project to transition to an intelligent electricity metering system, and early results suggest it is paying off.

So far, 57,000 smart meters have been installed out of a planned 112,000, with the capital city of Grozny leading the way—more than 29,000 devices are already online there. Other areas of the republic are also seeing significant progress.

The new system automates the entire process of electricity accounting, from data collection to processing and transmission. For consumers, the benefits are clear: real-time remote monitoring of electricity use, automated reporting that eliminates manual meter readings, expense analytics with cost-optimization tools, and online oversight of key consumption parameters.

Chechnya’s smart metering program is emerging as a model for how digital innovation can reshape utility services in Russia, creating a foundation for the next wave of data-driven public infrastructure.
