Russia Publishes First School Textbook on Drones
The new manual introduces high school students to UAV design, programming, and career pathways in unmanned aviation.
Russia has released its first school textbook dedicated to unmanned aerial vehicles, the Higher School of Economics said. The book, titled Bespilotnye Letatelnye Apparaty. Ot Ustroistva do Vybora Professii (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles: From Design to Career Choice), is intended for 10th and 11th grade students. It explains how UAVs are built, covers design and programming fundamentals, traces the history of drones, and outlines their practical applications.
In addition to theory, students will learn to pilot drones, program flights using computer vision and artificial intelligence, and develop skills in 3D modeling and prototyping. The textbook also addresses the legal framework governing drone operations. It will be used in specialized high school tracks focused on physics and computer science. The book is the first UAV-focused textbook to be included in the official registry of the Ministry of Education.
A Step Toward a Future Career
The publication can also support extracurricular robotics programs.
According to Dmitry Zemtsov, vice rector of HSE, executive secretary of the organizing committee of the National Technology Olympiad, and leader of the National Technology Initiative’s Kruzhkovoe Dvizhenie working group, drones today are used for monitoring, search and rescue, agricultural operations, delivery services, and even public safety.
The textbook is designed to help senior students build essential technical skills and, for some, choose a future profession.
