Russia Rolls Out Smart Traffic Lights to Ease Congestion and Improve Road Safety

AI-powered traffic lights are coming to Russian cities, starting with a major upgrade in Novosibirsk that aims to cut down on gridlock and accidents.

Artificial intelligence is now helping regulate traffic in Russia, aiming to reduce congestion and improve road safety. Novosibirsk plans to install more than 300 next-generation smart traffic lights by 2027. These systems will be integrated into the city’s traffic management program.

Currently, adaptive traffic light systems are operating at 113 intersections including key roads like Bolshevistskaya, Voskhod, and Zhukovskogo streets. AI analyzes real-time traffic data and automatically adjusts signal timings to keep vehicles moving and prevent bottlenecks.

In 2025, 43 traffic lights will be upgraded with new hardware and will repalce outdated equipment. The city has allocated 25 million rubles for this effort. Officials believe the project will significantly improve traffic flow and boost safety.

Moscow’s experience shows that adaptive traffic lights are effective at reducing vehicle density and alleviating congestion, offering a model for other cities to follow.
