AI System in Russian Hospitals Prioritizes Care for Pregnant Patients

A smart triage tool now helps Russian maternity wards assess the urgency of care needed for pregnant patients, based on real-time clinical data.

Russian hospitals are rolling out an intelligent assessment system to evaluate the condition of pregnant women and prioritize medical care accordingly. The system uses a digital checklist filled out by clinical staff to determine which patients need help the fastest.

An algorithm automatically places patients into one of three categories based on urgency. The first group includes those needing emergency care—women in labor or with critical health indicators. The second category is for non-life-threatening but urgent cases, while the third covers routine or scheduled admissions.

According to Nikolai Ankudinov from the Yekaterinburg Perinatal Center, patient data is displayed in real time on monitors in the hospital’s reception and delivery wards.

The system offers several advantages: it minimizes human error in triage, automatically tracks wait times, and enables medical staff to work more efficiently using tablets. Most notably, it ensures care is prioritized based on actual clinical need rather than arrival time—a crucial improvement for maternal health.
