Ulyanovsk Developer Creates App to Identify Bird Feathers
A mobile app called Perya ptits (Bird Feathers) has been developed in Ulyanovsk to help users identify which species a found feather belongs to.
The app was unveiled on the sidelines of Krasivaya nauka. Ptilologiya (Beautiful Science: Ptilology), an exhibition that opened at the Ulyanovsk Regional Museum of Local History.
“The Perya ptits app is based on the Ptitsy Sredney Volgi (Birds of the Middle Volga) app. The menu includes hints, so anyone can figure out how to use it,” said Anton Lobachev, the digital product’s developer.
Lobachev said users can identify the bird a feather came from and view a photo of it, as well as learn where such feathers are typically found and filter them by color to make searches easier. The app also includes information about feather anatomy and recommendations for preserving finds.
“All the information is stored locally on the device,” Lobachev said, adding that once downloaded, the app works without an internet connection.
