A neural network has animated a massive mural in the Russian Arctic, bridging traditional culture with cutting-edge technology and opening new horizons for digital art in remote regions.
A Reindeer Steps From Winter Into Summer
On the Yamal Peninsula, a giant mural of a reindeer now moves—thanks to AI. Originally painted in the fall of 2024 on a building at Gazpromneft-Yamal’s Novoportovskoye oil field, the five-story-tall artwork depicts a northern reindeer heading toward the sun, toward life. The mural was part of the “Discovering the Tundra” initiative and incorporates stylized ethnic motifs that reflect the restrained, resilient, and deeply nature-bound philosophy of the North.
Recently, the mural was animated using a neural network. In the video version, the reindeer turns its head and takes a symbolic step from Arctic winter into summer. On Yamal, where summer is fleeting and arrives late, the animation captures more than just a seasonal shift. It suggests renewal, hope, and the transformative power of technology in even the harshest environments.
For Indigenous cultures in the Arctic, the reindeer isn’t just an animal—it’s a symbol of life. Its digital ‘awakening’ embodies the convergence of tradition and innovation, expressing both cultural reverence and technological optimism.
