While the rest of the world watches ChatGPT and other large language models (LLMs) reshape communication and research, Russia is working on its own sovereign LLMs designed for scientific use. Recent megagrant-backed projects include:

A standout example is the partnership between the National Research Nuclear University (MEPhI) and the state corporation Rosatom. Their joint project, launched through the “Big MEPhI” initiative, focuses on developing AI-driven digital tools specifically for the nuclear industry.

What sets Russia’s AI strategy apart is its emphasis on technological sovereignty. From open-source platforms to purpose-built national algorithms, Russia is pushing for scientific independence in an increasingly competitive and fragmented world.
