Russia's Tver Region to Use AI to Help Traffic Cameras Identify Vehicle Makes and Models
Artificial intelligence is to be added to the Tver Region's automated traffic enforcement system in October 2026, enabling cameras to identify not only license plates but also vehicle makes and models.

The region currently operates 153 fixed and 12 mobile traffic enforcement cameras, which issue about 6,000 citations each day. The systems most commonly detect speeding, traffic violations at intersections, lane-marking violations, failure to wear seat belts, and illegal mobile phone use while driving. This year, authorities also added a new violation category: driving at night without headlights.
Under federal law, cameras are installed primarily at high-risk road sections, pedestrian crossings, and intersections. The number of traffic cameras operating in the region is expected to continue growing this year.
