Russian Specialists Deploy Experimental Data Center in Antarctica
The server installation is expected to support scientific research in one of the world’s harshest environments.

An experimental data center has been assembled in Antarctica. Russian hosting provider RUVDS, the University of Marine Practice and Tourism, and Stratonautika will test the capabilities of the equipment under extreme conditions. The hardware was delivered via the Argentine city of Ushuaia and the Drake Passage – one of the most dangerous maritime routes in the world. The servers were selected with the challenges of the sea crossing in mind. Specialists also installed a receiver designed to capture signals from a spacecraft.
Servers for Polar Research
The system will be operated by researchers at the Bellingshausen research station. The goal is to conduct research with minimal impact on the surrounding environment. After several months of testing, the equipment will be handed over to the scientists for permanent use. As Stratonautika noted, the route was difficult, but all the machines have now been installed and configured, and the launch was successful. The experimental project is expected to demonstrate the potential of server equipment operating in the harshest conditions. This could also prove important for future technology projects in Russia’s Far North.
