Russia Accelerates Jet Engine Testing with New Automation Software

A research team from Perm Polytechnic University has developed software that speeds up jet engine testing by 50 percent—advancing Russia’s path to digital sovereignty and aerospace competitiveness.

What Are Endurance Tests—and Why Do They Matter?

Endurance testing is a critical phase in the lifecycle of any aircraft engine. It involves simulating real-world operational scenarios on specialized test benches to evaluate the engine's reliability under flight-like conditions. These tests are essential, especially for gas turbine engines (GTEs), which are used not only in aviation but also in energy and transportation sectors. Safety hinges on performance, making these assessments mandatory before any commercial deployment.

Traditionally, trained operators controlled test stands manually, inputting settings and monitoring engine behavior. This process was both labor-intensive and prone to human error. To address this, scientists at Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNRPU) have introduced an automated test management system that transforms the process.

How the System Works

Developed under Russia’s 'Priority 2030' initiative, the software is directly loaded into the controller of a test bench. It autonomously governs key components—valves, pumps, sensors—executing test routines without human intervention. It sets the sequence, duration, and parameters of each test cycle and transitions smoothly between them.

This system sets the sequence, duration, and parameters—such as RPM, pressure, and temperature—for each engine mode, and manages transitions between them. And it does all this without any human input

The system also dynamically adjusts electric current to manage valve positions based on engine RPMs, significantly reducing the chances of operator-induced errors. Real-time data capture enables on-the-fly diagnostics, increasing test accuracy and revealing issues that might arise during actual operation.

Its architecture is built as a modular flowchart, allowing easy customization for other mechanical systems. The program runs on LabVIEW, a widely used industrial automation platform, which facilitates both domestic scaling and potential international adoption.

Strategic Value for Aerospace and IT

This project hits two strategic targets. First, it elevates Russia’s capabilities in industrial automation software—an area of high priority for national IT development. Second, it reduces reliance on foreign software in a sector where independence is vital for both security and innovation.

Accelerated certification cycles will bring safer, more efficient aircraft to market faster, boosting the competitiveness of Russia’s aerospace industry. Demonstrating advanced control and monitoring capabilities for gas turbines also strengthens the country’s positioning in global export markets, especially in emerging economies with growing aviation infrastructure.

Outlook and Next Steps

According to PNRPU’s press office, the software is already being implemented at a Rostec facility in Perm, confirming its readiness for real-world deployment. The project has received additional funding under the Priority 2030 program, enabling further enhancement and broader adoption.

Future development will focus on expanding diagnostic functions and integrating failure prediction modules. This will allow the system not only to detect anomalies but to forecast malfunctions before they happen—raising safety standards while lowering maintenance costs.

Commercialization is also on the table. PNRPU may begin producing the software as a standalone product, offering support and updates in collaboration with Rostec, which would act as the primary distribution partner both domestically and internationally. Potential markets include Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Africa—regions with rapidly developing aviation sectors but limited indigenous testing infrastructure.

This is more than a research breakthrough. It’s a robust, innovation-driven product designed to fortify Russia’s technological sovereignty and strengthen its competitive edge in aerospace engineering and software.
