Russia to Launch AI-Driven High-Speed Trains Between Moscow and St. Petersburg

On the country’s first high-speed rail line, trains will operate without drivers, powered entirely by artificial intelligence systems—a milestone for Russian transportation and a global showcase of autonomy in motion.

Russia is preparing to open its first fully autonomous high-speed rail route, connecting Moscow and St. Petersburg. The project, unveiled at the International Railway Salon “PRO//Motion.EXPO,” marks a breakthrough in the nation’s transportation system and positions Russia as a leader in deploying AI for passenger rail.

On this line, trains will run without human drivers, with control systems entirely managed by artificial intelligence. To support operations, the route will rely on stable satellite internet and be built on innovative ballastless monolithic concrete tracks, designed for higher durability and reliability. Automation will extend beyond train control: passenger boarding will use biometric technology to streamline formalities and cut waiting times to a minimum.

Production of the first trainsets is already underway at a factory in Verkhnyaya Pyshma. A total of 43 eight-car trains are planned. Serial production is scheduled to begin in 2026, with testing to start in fall 2027 on the section between Zelenograd and Tver.

According to St. Petersburg Vice Governor Kirill Polyakov, the launch of the line will be a landmark event for Russia’s technological development. He emphasized that this is only the beginning, with plans to expand the high-speed network across the country.

Earlier this year, Moscow also rolled out its first autonomous tram, signaling a broader shift toward driverless public transport.
