Russia Turns to AI to Streamline Customs Oversight

Neural networks are being deployed to automate how Russian authorities process imports and exports, promising faster checks and sharper insights into global trade flows.

Russia’s Federal Tax Service, working with Bauman Moscow State Technical University, is developing AI models to automate the review of customs declarations for all goods exported from and imported into the country. The system is already capable of extracting key product details and delivery terms automatically.

Officials estimate that once fully rolled out, the new platform could boost the efficiency of trade-flow and pricing analysis by up to 70 percent. The automation would free human experts from repetitive tasks, letting them focus on solving more complex challenges.

Today, customs officers still check product data manually, making it difficult to spot anomalies across massive datasets. The new AI-driven system is designed to unify analysis across all customs checkpoints, improving both accuracy and reliability in monitoring imports and exports. It can also automate the classification of goods and extraction of their core attributes.
