Russian AI Program Can Identify Fruits and Vegetables in Retail Stores

The computer vision tool promises to speed up inventory processes, reduce human error, and work even in small shops.

A resident of Chelyabinsk has developed an AI-powered program that can automatically recognize different types of fruits and vegetables, potentially transforming how retail stores track and sort their products. The technology, created by Chelyabinsk State University graduate Maksim Krasnov, uses a neural network to analyze images, isolate an object, and accurately determine its type.

For example, the system can distinguish one variety of apple from another without human input. Krasnov says the program will help stores automate inventory management, reduce reliance on manual labor, and minimize staff mistakes — all while speeding up operations.

The solution is ready for deployment even in small retail outlets. Future updates aim to improve performance under poor lighting conditions, making the technology more adaptable to real-world environments.
