Russian scientists have made a breakthrough in aviation acoustics by means of a supercomputer

New technologies open perspectives in airplane production

Russian researchers from the Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics of the Russian Academy of Sciences and MIPT have made a breakthrough in aviation acoustics. By means of supercomputer modeling, they managed for the first time to determine with high accuracy the sources of noise arising during the landing of a supersonic business jet.

Today, reducing the noise impact of aviation is becoming a priority. While aerodynamic parameters of modern airplanes are calculated quite accurately, modeling of acoustic characteristics remained a difficult scientific and technical problem until recently.

The uniqueness of the Russian research lies in the application of a combined approach, combining methods of computational fluid dynamics and aeroacoustics. The scientists emphasize that the use of the Lomonosov-2 supercomputer allowed them to perform calculations for a full-size model of a business jet wing with unprecedented detail.

MIPT professor Ivan Sofronov explained that the new method allows not only to predict the noise level, but also to understand its physical nature. This opens up fundamentally new possibilities for designing low-noise aircraft.

The results obtained, published in an international scientific journal, have already aroused professional interest. Specialists note that the developed algorithms can be applied not only to supersonic, but also to traditional passenger airliners.
