Russian Students Optimize AI App for Moscow Transit

A team of Russian students fine-tunes an AI-powered transport optimization tool for Moscow’s traffic system.

A student team from the Sirius University of Science and Technology has successfully optimized an AI-based application for the Moscow Department of Transport. Originally developed during the “Hackathon 3.0” competition—a challenge focused on real-world problems in big data, AI, and IT infrastructure—the project is now being refined with support from city officials.

One of the key challenges presented during the hackathon involved designing an algorithm to improve public transport flow during major city events. The students’ AI-driven solution analyzes real-time passenger load at bus stops and recommends optimal routes to minimize congestion and wait times.

To further improve their system, the team visited the Moscow Department of Transport to study its inner workings firsthand. Over four days, they tested river-based electric transport, explored the operations of the Unified Dispatch Center, and toured the Moscow Transport Development Center.

This initiative is a strong example of how Russia’s emerging digital education ecosystem is preparing students to tackle practical, high-impact problems even before graduation.
