Megafon Upgrades Network in Nuclear Power Town
Russia is implementing a strategy aimed at ensuring reliable connectivity across the country. The effort covers not only remote areas but also regional single-industry towns that host critical infrastructure facilities.
Megafon has recently upgraded its infrastructure in Kurchatov, a satellite city of the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant with a population of about 38,000. Connectivity is now more reliable, while users also have an easier way to obtain new numbers and activate additional tariff options.
The operator says its base stations in the city now use a combination of different radio-frequency bands. The equipment has been configured to provide the most uniform network coverage possible. Most of the new stations were installed in central parts of Kurchatov, where the largest residential areas, educational institutions and administrative buildings are located.
The area also includes one of Kurchatov residents’ favorite recreational spots, Tyoply Bereg Park, which stretches along the scenic shoreline of the Kursk Sea reservoir. People visiting the park should now find it much easier to stay in touch with family and friends by phone. This is particularly important during large public events, when network traffic increases.
Megafon has also opened a new retail store to make it easier for subscribers to resolve any issues they may encounter.
This type of network upgrade is particularly important for single-industry towns that host strategically important enterprises. Reliable telecom infrastructure allows digitalization projects for industrial processes to move forward much faster. It also creates the technological foundation for large-scale deployment of IoT solutions, supporting the development of smart-city systems.
Preparing for the Next Technology Shift
Another important point is that this type of modernization prepares the network for the deployment of 5G. Although the standard is currently being introduced only in major Russian cities, it may not be long before it begins appearing in smaller communities as well. Equipment capable of supporting higher data rates and reducing signal latency therefore needs to be installed now.
Megafon's next-generation connectivity is currently available in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Kazan, Krasnodar, Samara, Yekaterinburg and Nizhny Novgorod, as well as in regional industrial centers such as Veliky Novgorod and Tver. The company says it plans to expand coverage.
Keeping Pace With Technology
Network modernization is also an ongoing task for other operators. In 2023, for example, Tele2 installed new base stations in the Moscow Metro and laid more than 195 km of radiating cable in the tunnels, providing reliable mobile connectivity across the entire underground transit infrastructure.
Russian companies are also working to develop domestically produced telecom equipment. In 2024, MTS began pilot operation of 200 base stations supplied by Irteya, in which the mobile operator holds a majority stake. The project became one of the first large-scale examples of Russian-made base stations being deployed in a live network.
The network upgrade in Kurchatov demonstrates that advanced connectivity technologies are not limited to residents of major cities. Attention is being given to communities across the country. Without this approach, nationwide digitalization would be difficult to achieve, particularly because single-industry towns are home to a significant share of the country's most important industrial facilities.
