MEPhI and Rosatom Train the Next Generation of Digital Transformation Leaders

A new degree program from Russia’s National Research Nuclear University MEPhI aims to produce elite managers for digital projects in nuclear energy and mega-science infrastructure.

New Academic Tracks

Starting in September 2025, the Faculty of Business Informatics and Complex Systems Management at MEPhI will launch a new undergraduate program titled “Managing Digital Transformation in High-Tech Industries.” The program targets the training of managers who can lead innovation-driven projects in advanced sectors such as nuclear and conventional energy, as well as in mega-science facilities, including colliders, synchrotrons, and fusion reactors.

Students will study business informatics, digital technologies, and project management while working hands-on with AI, big data, digital twins, and knowledge management systems. This mix of competencies prepares graduates to lead complex, digitally integrated projects with a focus on competitiveness and sustainability.

The program meets global demand for specialists capable of embedding digital tools in knowledge-intensive industries. For Russia—a recognized leader in nuclear power—this marks a strategic step toward technological sovereignty and sustained innovation.

By aligning academic offerings with the needs of the digital economy, Russia is building a replicable model for training managers in high-tech domains.

The intersection of digital transformation and science-based innovation brings new challenges for today’s managers—challenges that demand creative and original approaches. In the search for cutting-edge solutions, we see a unique opportunity to combine interests in IT, management, business, and creativity

Domestic and Global Impact

The program offers significant potential for both domestic use and international export. As digital transformation becomes a global priority, emerging economies—particularly BRICS countries like India, China, and South Africa—need professionals who can manage digital projects in nuclear energy and adjacent sectors.

MEPhI graduates could, for instance, take on digitalization roles in countries where Rosatom is building new nuclear power plants, such as Egypt and Turkey. The curriculum is also adaptable for use on international educational platforms, fostering global collaboration in science and technology.

The program contributes to Russia’s IT sector by creating jobs for educators, course developers, and tech specialists. It also supports educational sovereignty by providing domestic frameworks for training in digital technologies.

Top Russian technical universities like MEPhI are emerging as talent hubs for Rosatom and other innovation-driven companies. Future plans include expanding the program to graduate studies and professional development, establishing a comprehensive pipeline for training digital transformation leaders.

A Retrospective View

Since 2020, Russian universities such as HSE and MIPT have developed digital business programs, but MEPhI stands out for its unique focus on science-heavy industries. Rosatom has pursued a digital strategy since 2018, integrating AI and digital twin technologies in nuclear energy operations—creating sustained demand for experts in this niche.

While top institutions like MIT, Stanford, and ETH Zurich offer courses on digital transformation, none have developed programs specifically geared toward nuclear energy. MEPhI’s long-standing expertise in nuclear engineering positions it as a global leader in this specialized educational segment.

Outlook and Projections

The new program cements Russia’s leadership in training personnel for the digital economy. Within three to five years, graduates are expected to lead key projects for Rosatom and major international initiatives like ITER. The curriculum may serve as a blueprint for other universities and could be exported to BRICS nations to deepen educational ties. Russia is poised to continue advancing IT education as a pillar of its technological competitiveness.
