Russian Detectors for BREST-OD-300 – A System That Monitors Fuel Integrity in the Reactor of the Future

Seventeen specialized detectors have been manufactured for the BREST-OD-300 experimental demonstration reactor to monitor the condition of nuclear fuel cladding. The equipment is an entirely Russian development created for the Proryv project.

What the Detectors Do and Why They Matter

Specialists from the Specialized Research Institute of Instrument Engineering have developed and delivered a batch of fuel cladding condition detectors for BREST-OD-300. The institute operates within Rosatom’s division for automated control systems and electrical engineering. The detectors measure the composition and volumetric activity of inert radioactive gases – xenon and krypton – within the fuel rod leak monitoring system.

 When a fuel rod cladding loses integrity, fission products enter the coolant or gas environment. Changes in radionuclide composition and activity make it possible to detect these processes at an early stage. The detectors function like blood analyzers for a reactor. By tracking parameters invisible to the naked eye, they indicate whether the fuel remains in a stable condition.

BREST-OD-300 and the Proryv Project

BREST-OD-300 is a fast neutron reactor with a lead coolant being built as part of the Proryv project. Its purpose is to demonstrate a closed nuclear fuel cycle, where plutonium is reproduced and reused, while the volume of high-level radioactive waste is reduced.

Reactors of this type belong to Generation IV systems and remain rare worldwide. As a result, the project is accompanied by the systematic development of a full suite of domestic equipment, including fuel, control systems, and safety instrumentation.

The delivery of detectors from the Specialized Research Institute of Instrument Engineering is part of this broader chain. It shows that Russia is not only designing the reactor itself but is also independently covering critical elements of the monitoring and measurement infrastructure.

How the Detectors Improve Safety

Fuel cladding integrity monitoring is one of the key safety parameters for any nuclear facility. If damage is detected early, a fuel assembly can be removed from operation before the situation escalates into an emergency scenario.

The new detectors are integrated into an automated fuel cladding leak monitoring system. It continuously evaluates the composition of inert gases in real time and records deviations from normal levels. For plant personnel, this means a constant stream of operational data instead of periodic sample analysis.

Such a system is especially important for a next-generation reactor that introduces solutions unfamiliar to the industry. The higher the accuracy and sensitivity of the instruments, the more confidently operators can manage the facility during commissioning and the first years of operation.

Everything we are doing within the Generation IV framework of the Proryv project is under the closest attention of the entire world, in the most literal sense. We are not only the architects but also the pioneers of a new generation of nuclear technology. This is one of the most important areas of work for Rosatom in the coming years.

Domestic Instrumentation Instead of Imported Sensors

The detectors were developed and manufactured by a Russian research institute. This reduces dependence on foreign suppliers and mitigates risks associated with sanctions, export restrictions, and long-term service support.

For Generation IV reactor equipment, reliance on imported sensors could introduce vulnerabilities. Any shift in political or economic conditions might affect deliveries or maintenance. A domestic line of instruments makes the system more predictable and resilient.

At the same time, Russia is strengthening its expertise in high-precision instrumentation for complex energy facilities. These competencies are essential for future reactor projects and form a technological base for potential export offerings.
