Latest Solar webProxy Update Reduces Risks in Web Access Administration
The system’s developers have added a range of useful and important features.

Russian developers continue to improve systems designed to protect information security at large companies. These platforms are gaining more capabilities and have reached reliability levels comparable to their foreign counterparts.
Recently, Solar Group announced an update to its Secure Web Gateway system, Solar webProxy 4.5.3. The latest version focuses on reducing risks associated with manual web access administration. For most large companies, managing that access becomes an operational process in its own right. Organizations assign employees different access rights, while policies themselves are often managed by several professionals. With large numbers of users and multilayered verification mechanisms, the risk of routine errors rises. Changes can get lost, while employees may retain excessive access after projects end. The update addresses all of these problems.
“In Solar webProxy 4.5.3, administrators can set start and end dates and times for access rules. The feature is available for SOCKS5, content filtering and packet inspection rules. Fixed dates can be combined with recurring schedules – for example, allowing access only during working hours for the duration of a project. The interface displays each rule’s current status, while its validity parameters are included in CEF and SIEM events. Administrators can see which rules remain active and which have already expired, eliminating the need to spend time sorting through outdated permissions before an audit,” the developers explain.

Protection Against Potential Failures
The update also addresses potential problems with Basic authentication. A failure of the primary server can disrupt employees’ internet access. For these scenarios, Solar webProxy 4.5.3 adds the option to specify backup server parameters. If the primary server stops responding, the system automatically switches to the backup, maintaining uninterrupted network access. Account-level errors, such as an incorrect password or a blocked user account, do not trigger failover.
The system also includes an updated Solar MultiProxy module. It is designed to address problems that often arise when security systems are upgraded. At large companies with distributed infrastructure, upgrades are frequently rolled out over an extended period, which can create compatibility issues between different software versions. Solar MultiProxy now takes each node’s version into account when applying group policies. The system sends only compatible settings, warns administrators which capabilities will be unavailable on older versions and does not distribute policies to unsupported versions. The interface displays version status and the number of nodes.

A Major Technical Evolution
Over the past several years, Solar webProxy has undergone a major technical evolution from a traditional secure web gateway into a more comprehensive tool for large, distributed infrastructures. In 2024, the system gained an endpoint agent, a more flexible policy builder and tools for automating administration. That same year, the system was certified by FSTEC of Russia under the country’s firewall security requirements.
Subsequent updates added capabilities for deeper network traffic analysis, integration with threat intelligence feeds, support for the Russian operating systems Astra Linux and RED OS, and other important features.

Competition Is Heating Up
Solar webProxy is highly likely to continue evolving, particularly as Russia’s SWG market moves beyond simply finding replacements for products from foreign vendors and begins to develop full-fledged domestic competition. In March 2026, for example, UserGate announced its own Secure Web Gateway product, uSWG. The system inspects traffic, including encrypted traffic, and blocks malicious, prohibited and unwanted resources. uSWG also manages employee access to external and internal web resources.
Competition among developers is likely to intensify in the near future. Centralized management, integration with Russian operating systems, and oversight of cloud and AI services are expected to become some of the most in-demand areas for further development.
