MAX Introduces Simplified Digital ID Creation for Russian Users

The developers of Russia’s national messenger MAX have launched a simplified process for creating a digital ID, requiring just one document to confirm a user’s age. The innovation brings the country one step closer to widespread, secure digital identification in offline environments.

More Than Just a Messenger

From the start, MAX’s developers envisioned the platform as more than a simple messaging app. Their goal is to build a multifunctional digital ecosystem that could eventually eliminate the need to carry physical documents. Now, adult users can create a dynamic digital ID — a QR code that updates automatically and serves as a digital version of official papers.

This digital credential can confirm a user’s age, student status, or eligibility for certain social benefits, such as being a parent of multiple children. For example, customers can use it to verify their age when purchasing age-restricted goods in stores.

How It Works

MAX’s latest update allows users to create a digital ID using a simplified process. Only one document is required — either verified biometrics, a modern biometric passport, or a driver’s license. To generate the ID via driver’s license verification, users must:

• Select the “Digital ID” icon in their MAX profile and click “Create.”

• Grant permission for facial or fingerprint login.

• Follow the link to the government’s Gosuslugi portal and verify their identity via driver’s license.

• Take a selfie.

• Receive confirmation that their Digital ID is ready.

“The implementation of a digital ID is a crucial milestone for the national messenger. It strengthens user confidence in a secure domestic platform while directly improving people’s daily lives.”

Currently, the digital ID can be used primarily to verify age when buying restricted items. The pilot program launched on September 15, with leading Russian retailers — including Magnit, X5 Group, and VkusVill — integrating the technology at self-checkout terminals. Age verification through MAX is now available in dozens of stores across Russia, including Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Krasnodar.

Time-Saving for Customers and Retailers

The digital ID offers clear benefits for both consumers and retail operators. It eliminates the need to carry physical IDs, while also speeding up checkout. To verify age, shoppers simply scan an age-restricted product, select “Verify Age via MAX” on the self-checkout screen, and hold the Digital ID QR code up to the reader — no store attendant required.

This automation not only streamlines the buying process but also reduces staff workload. MAX’s digital ID marks an important step toward universal, secure offline digital identification. VK, the company behind MAX, has confirmed that the number of participating retailers will continue to grow.

Expanding User Base and Infrastructure

The expansion of MAX’s functionality aligns with the messenger’s rapid adoption nationwide. As of early October, MAX had surpassed 40 million users. Since launch, users have made over 500 million calls and sent more than 2 billion messages.

Equally important, MAX has become part of Russia’s critical digital infrastructure. It remains operational even during mobile network disruptions, such as those caused by drone attacks. As the digital ID system develops, improving data protection mechanisms and ensuring reliability during creation will be key to attracting new users and maintaining trust.

Looking Ahead

The potential of MAX’s digital ID technology is immense. If scaled successfully, it could drastically reduce citizens’ reliance on paper documents in everyday transactions. Much will depend on how quickly developers enhance security features, improve integration with retail systems, and expand functionality to cover more identification scenarios.
